Details

The ventilated van, or vent van, was a key type of enclosed goods wagon used across Britain from the late 19th century through to the 1970s. Designed for transporting perishable or sensitive goods, these wagons featured slatted side vents to allow air circulation while protecting the contents from weather and theft. They carried a wide range of loads, from foodstuffs and drapery to machinery. Built by private companies and later standardised by British Railways, vent vans came in many variations. Though largely replaced by modern box vans, many remain preserved on heritage railways as part of historic freight trains.
